Eat More, Weigh Less? The Magic of Fiber in Your Diet

Forget about self-restraint. There’s a better weight loss success plan: Stuff yourself silly. Fill your mouth and your stomach without doing the same to your skinny jeans. It’s called fiber, and if you still think of it as something grandma stirs into her orange juice to stay regular, then it’s time for a serious update.

A Breakdown of Fiber

What is it, exactly, and why should you be ingesting it every day without fail?

Fiber is a macronutrient, found in the indigestible parts of a plant. It’s found in fruits and veggies, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and beans. Now that the fiber trend is catching on, you will find it has been added to plenty of foods at the grocery store. Other foods stop to pay a toll along your gastrointestinal highway, but fiber zips through the express lane because your body can’t digest it. And that’s the beauty of fiber!

You’ve probably heard that there are two kinds of fiber: soluble and insoluble. In your stomach, soluble fiber binds with liquids to form a gummy gel. It makes you feel full. It slows digestion, allowing your body to absorb more nutrients from the other foods you eat.  Insoluble fiber passes through your intestines largely intact, bulking up as it absorbs liquid in the stomach; the bulk pushes waste down and out of your system.

Fiber is also a hero to your heart. It helps to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Soluble fiber’s effect on cholesterol is so potent that the FDA allows companies to advertise this fact on products like oatmeal.

Why You Need More Fiber

Most of us aren’t getting enough. The average American man and woman consumes about 10 to 15 grams of fiber a day — about half of what’s needed to meet the minimum daily requirement of 25 grams. And experts say that more is even better — about 30 to 40 grams a day, according to the Harvard School of Medicine.

The more fiber a food has, the better. It just so happens that most high-fiber foods tend to be low-calorie so you can eat a lot of them. Fiber makes you full because it swells in your stomach when it absorbs liquid. And when you’re feeling full, you’re eating less and losing weight!

The Ultimate Fiber Solution

To get the most out of fiber, Genesis Today’s GenEssentials™ Fiber offers a potent blend of digestive fibers that speed-up the breakdown of foods. This means you’ll achieve optimal absorption and assimilation of nutrients from the foods you eat. It also contains a heat-generating blend and a proprietary digestive tract blend. These blends enhance the complete digestion of all food groups and in the process, support the health of the entire digestive system.

What You Should Know About Acai

The word is out about the benefits of acai. And it’s not just hype: with more than twice the antioxidants of blueberries, the acai berry has captured the attention of the health-conscious community.

The acai berry has been known as the “beauty berry” for centuries by the inhabitants of the Brazilian rainforest where it grows. The reason? Rich in antioxidants, acai is known to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and to even out skin tone. Because acai is chock full of antioxidants, amino acids (protein), and essential fatty acids, the tiny purple berry packs a nutritional punch rarely seen in the natural world.

To the people of South America and the Brazilian Amazonian region, the acai berry has been a staple and critical medicinal berry for centuries. There are many legends that pertain to the acai’s incredible healing and sustaining powers, and acai remains a popular health and energy food in Brazil today.

Acai berries can help you feel full longer. The acai berry is loaded with heart-healthy omega fatty acids, which work to coat your stomach. This slows digestions to give you the sensation of feeling full, which may help reduce the urge to snack in-between meals or late at night.

Not all acai is created equal. Genesis Today gets acai for their juices and supplements directly from the source: the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. Genesis Today superfruit farmers follow the traditional methods of the indigenous people of each region, wild harvesting and hand gathering acai berries.

Superfruit Oils That Trump Fish Oils

Omega fatty acids must be butter because they’re on a roll!

Well, not literally, but omega fatty acids sure are popping up everywhere and in the unlikeliest supermarket aisles. Margarine, peanut butter, mayonnaise, even granola bars now claim “Heart-healthy omegas!” on the label. And, you guessed it—they’re not naturally occurring in these foods.

Experts agree on the merits of omega fats: They’re great for your skin, help ward off Alzheimer’s, and decrease the risk of heart disease. Recent research has found that omega-3s are critical for our reproductive system and our nervous system. They also help fight inflammation, diabetes and even work to counter depression.

With all those reasons to reach for essential fatty acids [EFAs] such as omega-3s, it is no wonder companies are adding them to every food they can think of. But before you reach for omega-3 fortified cereal on your next grocery run, take a closer look at what you’re eating. There’s a good chance you’re still not getting what you need.

Fish is a good source of omegas. But, is it the best source?

Genesis Today wants to plant this seed with you. There’s a meal ticket to superior health and it comes in superfruit oil form.

Fishing For Superfruit Power?

You are likely aware how great fish is for your health.  But consider the environment where that fish came from. Then consider a different type of omega fatty acid sourced from the most pure, uncharted place on the planet: the Amazon.

“The difference between the omega-3 derived from fish and the [omega-3] extracted from a plant is like night and day,” says Dr. Lindsey Duncan, ND, CN, and CEO and Founder of Genesis Today. “One comes from the ocean … man’s dumping ground, full of petroleum, metals, and chemicals, while plant-based omega-3s come from the rainforests which are pure and haven’t been man’s dumping ground over the years.”

Although omega-3 is important to overall good health, the human body is not able to produce sufficient quantities on its own. So you either have to eat fortified foods or take supplements. And since the modern day diet doesn’t provide sufficient nutrients to feed all 60 trillion cells in the human body, it’s key to consume essential fatty acids every meal.

If you’re trying to get your fill of natural omega-3, -6, -7, and -9 fatty acids, bioflavonoids, phytosterols, and polyphenolic antioxidants, Genesis Today’s GenEssentials™ Superfruit Oil 3-6-7-9 Blend supplement is an excellent choice. It’s driven by a therapeutic vitality that helps support your heart, healthy skin and appearance, cognitive function, cellular and reproductive health for your overall wellness. Most importantly it’s fish free!

It contains a remarkable arrangement of exotic plant-based superfoods. It contains sacha inchi, derived at the basin of the Peruvian Amazon and sea buckthorn, which offers high amounts of the uncommon omega-7 fatty acid. This does wonders for the skin. It also contains açaí, goji, hempseed, flax seed, pumpkin, and coconut oils.

Let this be your start on the path to nutritional prosperity, in oil form.

The Makeover Issue: From the Inside Out

Age is simply an issue of mind over matter. And age simply doesn’t matter if you don’t mind it.

However, conventional wisdom tells women to brace themselves as they age: prepare for a downward spiral of your skin, hair, nails and overall appearance. But here’s a little secret you can use to maintain your youthful glow as you age. The secret to aging gracefully is achieving beauty from the inside out. Eating superfoods is your most potent cosmetic.

Natural Beauty Comes To Fruition

This berry is what Brazilians have used for beauty for centuries. If you want to look and feel better from the inside out, follow this regimen from celebrity nutritionist, Dr. Lindsey Duncan, CN, ND.

Smart Snacking Begins By Chewsing Wisely

Genesis Today Vitamin Superfruit Chews and Superfruit Gummy Vitamins available in the vitamin aisle at your local retailer. Click here to find a store near you.

Snacking when you’re trying to lose weight is like getting a lavish pedicure when you’re on a budget: You know you shouldn’t do it!

However, keeping your body fueled with the right foods throughout the day is important, for weight control and maintaining healthy energy levels.

Chew on this: The impact food has on your body is amplified when it wallops your bloodstream on an empty stomach. This makes your choice of snacks wildly crucial. When you experience intense hunger and food enters your system it is ravenously absorbed into your blood stream, having a greater impact on your body.

This means if you drink coffee on an empty stomach you’ll be more wired than an undercover FBI agent. Eat fats and sugars and you’ll absorb more of the calories and you’ll feel saturated, sluggish and full of regret. Not exactly a wise decision.

Here’s a critical epiphany: Hunger is the opportune time to either cause amplified damage to your body or wash it over in serious nourishment, since everything you eat will be absorbed more than it would if you were full.

Shedding the Light on Snacking

Snacking is good when it’s done right. It can be an excellent way to fuel up and keep your metabolism moving (snacking also helps you rein in portion sizes at meals).

Energy management should be one of your major goals throughout the day. Yet the average person fuels their body the way they gas up their vehicle when it’s running on fumes. It’s a red-warning-light response, and it usually triggers a pit stop for a Snickers bar. Wrong move! Silencing that tummy with a steady stream of the B-complex family of vitamins is the way to go.

Let It B, Let It B

B vitamins contain important nutrients that are needed for development, growth and numerous bodily functions. They play a large role in the enzymes that control the chemical reactions in our body.

One of their main roles is converting the food we eat into energy. B vitamins are also essential to the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen through the blood to the body’s tissues.

A diet lacking B vitamins will cause weakness, tiredness, pale skin, mood changes, and even lead to difficulty walking.

Curbing cravings is important for weight loss. B vitamins can control appetite and hunger, encourage normal thyroid function and regulate metabolism.

Chews That Move You

If you’re a vegan or vegetarian there’s a good chance you take vitamin B supplements. If not, then please do! Chewing your food releases nutrients aiding stomach digestion and absorption. Did you know that chewing, rather than swallowing your vitamins is a more effective way to feed vital nutrients and minerals to your body?

Embrace the power of being chewsy. Eat smart and eat right with snacks like Genesis Today Vitamin Super Chews. Our chews are the perfect grab-n-go snack for nutritional power!

To get the most out of your vitamins, chews Genesis Today Gummy Vitamins. These are the only gummies with antioxidant rich superfruits. Our gummies deliver all the nutrition with unparalleled fruit flavor.

Another Reason to Go Green!

When it comes to feeling pHresh the solution is as simple as turning a new leaf in your diet. Eat more greens.

Balancing acidic levels in your body is essential to optimal health, which begins with a vigorous, yet steady consumption of nourishing plant-based nutrients. After all, you are what you eat, and the greener you are the better you’ll feel about yourself.

Just as our normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, there are other measures of normality within the body. The levels of sugar, oxygen, and carbon dioxide within the blood must all be stable. The potential Hydrogen (the balance between acid and alkaline) of bodily fluids, including blood, should be 7.4 or slightly alkaline.

Balanced body chemistry pH is vital to healthy immunity, and simply put, staying alive. The body has alkaline parts (like the blood) and acidic parts (like the inside of the stomach). When our overall body chemistry is overly-acidic, we open ourselves up to arthritic conditions, osteoporosis, and many other serious conditions. A healthy body keeps large alkaline reserves to meet the demands of too many acid-producing foods. When these reserves are depleted beyond a 3:1 ratio, your health can be seriously threatened.

Why an  Alkaline Diet?

An alkaline diet is a diet that emphasizes, to varying degrees, fresh fruit and vegetables (especially superfruits and super vegetables), roots and tubers, nuts, and legumes. Approximately 20% of the foods on your plate at each meal should be acid-forming and approximately 80% should be alkaline-forming.

Excess acidity caused by eating too many acid-forming foods, and not enough alkaline foods leads to poor health.

Need More Green In Your Life?

We could all use some raw greens. Our diets and nutrient levels dictate how we feel on any given day.

“The more ‘alive’ foods we eat, the more alive we feel. The more dead foods we eat the more dead we will feel,” says Dr. Lindsey Duncan.

Introducing Genesis Today GenEssentials™ Greens, a potent, premium blend of food-based nutrition made from a powerful combination of organic green superfoods, vitamins, minerals, probiotics, antioxidants, and phytonutrients, providing energy support, essential nutrition and much more. It’s raw and it’s everything your body needs to maintain a vigorous, healthy life.

What does it do? The raw greens work to maintain energy levels, support cleansing and detoxification, healthy digestion and more all while striking a balance in bodily function.

GenEssentials™ Greens provides a premium blend of raw green superfoods that support your body’s alkaline balance while increasing energy levels and maintaining healthy immune function.

GenEssentials™ Greens contains uncommon ingredients such as shattered cell-wall chlorella (used to increase the body’s absorption of nutrients), wheatgrass (supports the body’s cleansing and detoxification process naturally), prebiotics (assists with digestive tract growth of beneficial bacteria), spirulina (an algae high in protein, iron, beta carotene and vitamin B12 for natural energy level support).

One serving of GenEssentials™ Greens delivers the phytonutrients of up to five servings of dark green leafy vegetables and 173 other remarkable nutrients that work to maintain health at a cellular level. After all, there are over 60 trillion cells in the human body so it’s safe we need all the nourishment we can get. You’re also getting 25 billion probiotics (live active cultures) per serving, which means a lot of friendly digestive bacteria. The unique mix of nutrients such as chlorophyll, organic noni fruit concentrate, milk thistle, cilantro, Bilberry extract, parsley, alkalinizing greens and more work together to support your body’s ability to maintain a vigorous and spirited edge. Connecting the dots to food that influences how you feel has finally arrived in a very, very green from the inside out. GenEssentials™ Greens brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “going green.”

Kick Tension To The Curb

Release of the stress hormone cortisol as well as the neurotransmitter adrenalin is healthy under short-term stress situations, like when you need to run away from a rabid dog. These hormones keep you alert and focused. The problem is when we lead lives that make us feel like we are constantly running from a vicious dog. Increased levels of cortisol and adrenalin on a chronic basis are known to be toxic to almost every bodily system.

There are many natural ways to train both mind and body to relax and let go of tension. Some natural techniques that reduce physical symptoms of stress include:

  • Aerobic exercise. 3-5 times per week to increase feel-good endorphins and release nervous energy.
  • Yoga or tai chi. Once a week to promote emotion-centered thinking.
  • Aromatherapy (Sniff essential oils in scents of lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood to induce relaxation.
  • Massage. People receiving weekly massages report lower levels of workplace stress.
  • Visualization. Practice optimism. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking since it can lower blood pressure and boost immunity.
  • Breathing techniques. From the abdomen, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, for 10 seconds at a time.
  • Meditation. Clear your mind, eliminate distractions, and focus on your surroundings. It inspires calmness, even on your craziest days.
  •  Acupuncture. Try it — it’s not painful. Supporters say the ancient medical practice alters brain chemistry and regulates nerves to relieve stress.

Dr. Lindsey’s Rainforest Remedies

An introduction to some little-known (but largely efficacious!) plant therapies from the Amazon rain forest

GUARANA: NATURAL ENERGY BOOSTER

History: Native to the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, particularly the areas of Manaus and Paratins, the Guaraná is a shrub that grows up to 12 meters high and produces a small, round, red fruit that grows in clusters. As it ripens, the fruit splits and the seed emerges, giving it the appearance of an eye, which is the source of many indigenous legends.

South American tribes, especially the Guaranis (which is where the name comes from), have used this plant since long before Brazil was even discovered. The seeds were dry roasted and then mixed with water to treat various illnesses and suppress appetite during fasting. Across the rainforest, Guaraná has been used to boost energy, endurance and stamina in order to work longer, harder days. It has also been used as a pain reliever, astringent, stimulant and tonic for the treatment of diarrhea, hypertension, fever, migraine, neuralgia and dysentery.

Today this seed is used across Brazil and in some U.S. products to boost energy, support mental acuity, fight fatigue and increase stamina and physical endurance.

Healing Elements: Guaraná seeds are the richest natural source of caffeine, containing up to 8% caffeine, which is about 2.5 times the amount of caffeine found in coffee. It also contains theophylline and theobromine. The seeds also contain large quantities of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, terpenes, starch, resinous substances, and saponins.

The xanthine alkaloids (caffeine, theophylline, theobromine) are believed to contribute to Guaraná’s therapeutic activity. In clinical studies, theophylline stimulates the central nervous system and heart, alleviates fatigue and increases alertness. It also stimulates diuretic action and alleviates constriction of the bronchials, making it helpful for asthma. Theobromine counters the over-stimulating effect of caffeine, which makes it ideal for long-term use to boost energy. Traditional uses of the guaraná are likely explained by its caffeine content and the “feel good” effect of theobromine.

How can I get Guarana in the United States? You can get Guaraná in a powder, tincture or capsule form; it is also the main ingredient in many energy drinks and supplements currently on the market. However, you have to be very careful to read the label on the energy products you are consuming. Many companies use sugars or artificial sugars to give you an energy “high”, but these products can be doing more harm than good because with a sugar high, comes the subsequent crash. If you need a kick start to the day or a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, Dr. Lindsey recommends an energy shot with Guaraná that is naturally sweetened and properly balanced. This will give you sustained energy and none of the nasty side effects. You will also feel the effects of a liquid shot faster (3 minutes) than a supplement because your body will absorb it faster. Genesis Today’s Pure Energy Organic Energy Shot are the perfect example of a product that utilizes Guaraná as a natural stimulant, and provides the additional nutritional balance needed to support an healthy energy boost.

GRAVIOLA: IMMUNE BOOSTER

History: Graviola, also known as Brazilian Paw Paw, is an evergreen tree that is indigenous to the warmest tropical areas of South and North America, particularly the Amazon rainforest. It grows to be 5 to 6 meters high and produces glossy, large, dark green leaves and a heart-shaped edible fruit that is about 15 – 18 centimeters in diameter. The fruit is greenish-yellow on the outside, white flesh on the inside and you can find it in local markets all across the tropics. However, the most therapeutic parts of the tree are the leaves, bark, roots and seeds, which have been used by the indigenous peoples of the Amazon to treat various illnesses for thousands of years.

Healing Elements: Graviola is a natural immune booster, which has traditionally been used to kill parasites, ameliorate liver problems, reduce fevers and treat cold and flu. Scientists have studied Graviola since the 1940s and most research has been centered around Annonaceous acetogenins, a group of natural compounds which Graviola produces in its leaf, stem, bark and fruit seeds. Multiple studies have confirmed that these compounds have antitumorous properties—meaning they fight various types of cancer cells—and thus are great support to the immune system.

Annonaceous acetogenins are only in the Annonaceae family, which is the family that the Graviola belongs to. In addition to the antitumorous properties, these elements are known for their anti-parasitic, insecticidal, and antimicrobial capabilities. Purdue University has conducted significant research on acetogenins funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and The National Cancer Institute. These studies have resulted in at least nine patents on the results around the antitumorous and insecticidal uses of these acetogenins.

How can I get Graviola in the United States? Graviola extract is most commonly sold in U.S. health foods stores in tincture, powder or capsule form. You can also drink your Graviola, as many stores sell Graviola tea bags or Graviola powder, which can be brewed into a tea. Dr. Lindsey’s favorite way to consume Graviola is by mixing it into a shake with other herbs and juices.

CAT’S CLAW: PAIN FIGHTER

History: The Cat’s Claw, which is known locally in South America as the “uña de gato” is a powerful, woody vine that gets its name from the claw-like thorns that grow on the vine. The plant is very strong and resilient; it’s this type of plant—with the ability to fight with and dominate other plant species—that gives it exceptional healing capabilities. The “laws of the jungle” definitely apply here, as Cat’s Claw has the same properties when fighting pain in the human body as it does when fighting for dominance in the jungle.

Indigenous to the Amazon rainforest, the vine can reach over 30 meters high up into the rainforest canopy. The Cat’s Claw has been used medicinally by multiple indigenous tribes for thousands of years, with the earliest written documentation taking place about 2,000 years ago by the Ashaninka Indian tribe in Peru. This tribe remains the largest commercial source of Cat’s Claw in Peru today.

The Ashaninka use the plant to treat arthritis and bone pain, cure deep wounds, control inflammation and temper gastric ulcers. Because it has been relied upon for so long to treat pain and inflammation, Cat’s Claw is traditionally said to “normalize the body.”

Healing Elements: Cat’s Claw has several medicinal compounds that account for its many uses. One of the most studied is a group of chemicals called quinovic acid glycosides that have been documented for their anti-inflammatory and antiviral actions. Additionally, antioxidant chemicals (catechins, procyanidins and tannins) as well as plant sterols (campesterol, stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol) account for the plant’s anti-inflammatory properties. A group of compounds known as carboxyl alkyl esters has been documented with immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, anticancerous, and cell-repairing properties.

How can I get Cat’s Claw in the United States? Cat’s Claw is native to the Amazon, but it also grows in the U.S., and it has been known to takeover gardens because of its aggressive growth. You can find dried Cat’s Claw vine in the raw at herb shops, or you can buy it in a tincture or capsule supplement form in health food stores.

Need More Energy?

Let’s face it, we all lead busy lives. Between work, an endless to-do list, social commitments, hobbies, errands, and spending quality time with family and friends, many of us are tired at the end the day. Energy is the one thing that we can all use a little more of—yet so few of us actually know how to gain more of it.

To enjoy more energy, you need to treat your body right. There are a few simple tips you can incorporate into your daily routine, that will provide more get-up-and-go and help you power through your day.

Stay hydrated. Drinking enough water (at least 8 glasses a day) is essential to having energy. Your body is approximately 60% water. When you are dehydrated, your body doesn’t function properly and you can experience headaches and fatigue. Nothing hydrates you better than water, but other beverages like fruit juices, herbal teas and smoothies help boost hydration as well. However, you will want to avoid beverages with a lot of refined sugar if hydration is your goal.

Eat small meals throughout the day. Eating more frequent meals helps keep your blood sugar levels balanced. When your blood sugar is stable, your body functions at its best. You also have the energy you need, to do whatever you need to do. Try eating small meals with a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats. Healthy fats are the number one source of energy for your body. Your snacks can include yogurt, a handful of nuts, and plenty of fresh fruits and pre-cut veggies.  Nibble on these during the day to keep your blood sugar levels in check and give your body the nutrients it needs.

Get a good night’s sleep. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night is absolutely essential to having more energy. Sleep is your body’s time to unwind, rejuvenate and repair itself. When you do not get a good night’s sleep, you are likely to feel tired and cranky. You can also fall into a serious sleep deficit it you often get fewer than 7-8 hours of sleep each night. To get a good night’s sleep, try to go to bed at the same time every night and avoid caffeine and exercise late at night. Also try soothing activities like taking a warm bath or listening to relaxing music before going to sleep.

Eat fewer sweets. Sugar might give you a little energy boost in the short-term, but you will experience the inevitable “sugar crash.” Consuming sweets and high-sugar foods spikes your blood sugar, which causes your body to get out of balance. You will then experience fatigue soon after that sugar rush wears off. But don’t worry! You can satisfy your sweet tooth, in a healthy way. Try a small piece of 70% dark chocolate (this is full of antioxidants), a fruit smoothie, frozen yogurt, fresh fruit or natural fruit juice. These are great alternatives to baked goods and other sweets made with refined sugar. You’ll not only have more energy, but you’ll feel better with these healthier choices.

Get your B-vitamins. B-vitamins play an important role in supporting various bodily functions and converting food into energy. Including B-vitamin rich foods and beverages in your diet and taking a quality B-complex vitamin is vital to having the energy your body needs to function.  When you eat a meal, your body needs assistance from B-vitamins to help break down your food and convert it into energy. B-vitamins also help your body ease stress. When you are less stressed, you feel more energized.

Here’s to having more energy! If you follow some of our simple “energizing” tips, and get some exercise, we think that you’ll not only experience more energy—you’ll look and feel better too!

Tissues and More – How to Load Your Pantry for Cold & Flu Season

When December hits, I’m almost guaranteed to get a sinus infection.  For the past several years, I’ve found myself at the doctor’s office right before Christmas asking for antibiotics.  When I ran my first marathon – the Las Vegas Marathon in December of 2007 – I was on a heavy-hitting, one month course of Amoxicillin that rotted my stomach and ruined my appetite.

Sickness is nothing foreign to modern society.  With the demand for efficiently-populated schools, workplaces, retail lay-outs, and living spaces, we find ourselves in close contact with people all day long.  And their germs.  My brother spent the first three years of his teaching career chronically ill from his students.  When I worked at a car dealership, the constant flow of salespeople, mechanics, and customers created a virtual Petri dish of toxic virus.

And let’s face it, if we wait until we have a cold or the flu before we take action, it’s too late to “supplement” our way out of being sick—we’ll just have to suffer through it like everyone else!

Here at Genesis Today, our philosophy is to prepare our bodies with their best fighting chance before a crisis hits. And with cold and flu season in full swing, we know that staying healthy is on everyone’s mind.  Besides the usual – and very sound – home remedies such as staying hydrated, washing your hands regularly, not touching your face, and avoiding the mistletoe, we have some great tips to help support a healthy immune system when you need it the most.

Genesis Today Vitamin C with Zinc Super Chews

We can all agree that America as a whole is undernourished.  We don’t take our vitamins, and we don’t eat enough fresh, life food.  It’s particularly crucial to load up on supplements before you begin feeling unwell.  Everyone knows why they tell you to drink more orange juice during the cold and flu season – because of the Vitamin C.  It’s a potent antioxidant that helps your body fight free radicals and helps support a healthy immune system.  We recommend that you go beyond orange juice, which is why all of our products contain more vitamin C than the average glass of orange juice.  Our Vitamin C Super Chews with Zinc, for example, contain a whopping dose of Vitamin C, plus zinc and Echinacea, a triple dose of protection during this cold and flu season.  They can even help when you start to feel your immune system suffer.*

Echinacea, otherwise known as the Purple Coneflower. It grows in abundance in the south, we see lots here in Texas!

Zinc and Echinacea are fabulous protectors.  They both contain compounds that, prepare your body and give it your best fighting chance during this cold and flu season.  A lot of our customers have reported that when they take 2-4 Vitamin C Super Chews per day, it helps them stay healthy right on through winter and into spring.*

If you’re a juice fan, sip away!  It’s vital to stay hydrated, even before you get sick.  But reach for more than low-nutrient orange juice – make sure to pick a juice with lots of Vitamin C and B Complex Vitamins.  B Vitamins are a fabulous source of natural energy, and both B1 and B6 contain  essential properties that protect and sustain our bodies.  With the proper combination of good habits and nutrients, it’s possible to stay health during this holiday season!

Cheers to your health, and a great Holiday and Near Year’s!

Genesis Today isn’t a company that makes products for your health. Not at its heart, anyway. Genesis Today is really a healing company with deep clinical roots on a mission to create simple, accessible ways for people to enjoy healthier lives. The products, including Genesis Today juices, are the vehicles that help get people there. But the strength of the company is its passion—to help make a difference in people’s lives; to formulate the purest, most effective, and most potent products available; to innovate; harvest, formulate and produce in ways that promote healing and sustainability; to do all that and still provide what we call “serious value.”

Life is a bowl of cherries!

Are you looking for a natural, easy way to ease jet lag and insomnia?

Try adding cherries and cherry juice to your diet! Researchers are finding that the red compounds found in red foods like cherries, may support longevity and healthy sleep. Their secret? Melatonin. Melatonin is a potent anti-oxidant and helps the body to regulate regular, healthy sleep patterns.

Cherries (fresh, dried, frozen, juice or concentrate) are one of the few foods which are a natural source of melatonin. Travelers frequently have a bottle of melatonin in their carry-on bags, but eating cherries might be a more natural and tasty way to ease the side effects of traveling across different time zones. The body’s pineal gland naturally produces melatonin. By consuming cherries, you’ll be boosting your body’s melatonin levels. Try eating fresh or dried cherries one hour before your desired sleep time. If traveling, try dried cherries.  After arrival, continue consuming cherries an hour before bedtime for three consecutive evenings.

According to Russel J. Reiter, PhD, one of the world’s leading authorities on melatonin found that melatonin may play a role in supporting anti-aging. Melatonin neutralizes the oxidative and inflammation process caused by aging, thereby suggesting that melatonin may contribute to slowing down aging. The authors (Reiter and colleagues at the University of Granada in Spain) suggest taking melatonin daily for people between the ages of 30-40.

Genesis Today’s 4Sleep and Relaxation is made with pure Montmorency Tart Cherry juice! Montmorency cherries (Prunus cerasus) are also very high in polyphenolic compounds known as anthocyanins, which have very strong antioxidant activity. They have an ORAC Rating of 14,000 ORAC Units/100 gram.
Proprietary Herbal Blend which includes Chamomile, Jujube, Hops, L-Theanine, 100% pure Noni juice & Melatonin. No added sweeteners, colors, flavors, excipients or binders.

It’s easy to enjoy cherries every day! Try these quick and easy ways to add more cherries to your diet:

  • trail mix
  • add dried cherries to your oatmeal or breakfast cereal
  • add it to your salad
  • replace blueberry recipes with cherries
  • keep a small bag of dried cherries in your hand bag or gym back for a quick snack
  • Replace the raisins in your raisin oatmeal cookies with dried cherries!
  • Add cherries to grains like wheat berries, couscous, quinoa, rice pilaf etc.
  • Blend frozen cherries with cherry juice and yogurt for an amazing quick breakfast smoothie!
  • Add a couple of frozen cherries thaw them for a few minutes, layer with yogurt and granola.
  • Add cherry juice to your seltzer water
  • Make cherry ice cubes with cherry concentrate juice and add them to your drinks for a sweet tart flavoring!
  • Blend juices with cherry juice
  • Fill your water bottle with 100% organic cherry juice and head over to the gym or the take it with you on your hike!

Good Day Austin!

Below is the link to the Good Day Austin segment that aired live this morning. Dr Lindsey explained to the host, Keri Bellacosa, that the best way to make and enjoy smoothies is to use super-nutritious Genesis Today products

http://www.myfoxaustin.com/dpp/good_day/Unhealthy-Smoothies-20100719-ktbcgd

The Right way To “Juice” Questions and answers are below.

Make sure to avoid a juice that:
• Has no nutritional value (if you are not getting vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, it’s really not good for you).
• Is loaded with sugar (spikes blood sugar, contributes to obesity and diabetes).
• Is loaded with artificial sweeteners (toxic and produce a wide range of side effects).
• Is mostly glorified sugar water, with water being one of the first, if not the first ingredient.
• Doesn’t have fiber (fiber helps support healthy blood sugar levels).

When buying juice, look for the following:
• Is labeled 100% fruit juice
• With real superfruits, preferably a high-quality juice that lists the amount of superfruits per serving.
• Is packed with vitamins, minerals, and powerful nutrients.
• Has real juice and fruits listed in the first ingredients (as opposed to water).
• Has no sugar added
• Has no preservatives
• Has no artificial colors, flavors, or dyes
• Contains fiber
• Doesn’t contain artificial sweeteners
• Lists the ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) to fight free radicals and provide antioxidant protection
• Provides additional nutrients such as omega fatty acids or protein
• Provides B-Vitamins for natural energy.

Here are three of Dr. Lindsey’s favorite smoothies that you can make at home, for a fraction of both the calories and cost of what you would find at your local smoothie or juice bar.
• Happy Tummy Smoothie
• 4oz Genesis Today Kiwi Probiotics Yogurt Smoothie
• 8oz Genesis Today Acai Berry Juice
• 1 frozen banana
• ½ cup frozen strawberries
• 5 ice cubes

• Purple Perfection Smoothie
• 6oz Genesis Today Acai Berry Juice
• 6oz Genesis Today Resveratrol Juice
• 1 organic banana
• 5 ice cubes
• 1oz shot Protein100
• 1 scoop 4Fiber

• Goji Happy Smoothie
• 12oz Genesis Today Goji Berry Juice
• 12oz frozen strawberries
• 1 organic banana
• 5 ice cubes
• 1oz Protein100
• 1 scoop 4Fiber

Beat the heat (& free radicals) with berry popsicles!

Home made berry yogurt pops

Home made berry yogurt pops

Before we can appreciate antioxidants, we must first understand oxidation.  In humans, oxidation is the process of cells burning oxygen for fuel. Free radicals are the unstable by-products of this process. These molecules cause damage to surrounding cells if left uncoupled by antioxidants.

Our bodies naturally produce antioxidants, which step in to attach themselves to free radicals, thereby neutralizing them and preventing them from causing further damage. The presence of antioxidants is determined by many factors including genetics, health, and diet.

Scientists believe that oxidation may be a risk factor for more serious health concerns such as the cardiovascular system, immunity and skin health.

Anthocyanins are flavonoid antioxidants that make up the purple, red and blue pigments in certain fruits. Think acai berries and to a lesser degree, blueberries.

Carotenoids are important antioxidants including beta carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin and others that are especially beneficial to eye and vascular health. Think goji berries, sea buckthorn and carrots.

Ellagic acid is a type of polyphenol antioxidant prominent in many berries. Think pomegranate – one of the best sources of this antioxidant.

Flavonoids are the largest class of antioxidants, of which more than 5,000 have been  identified in foods. Think mangosteen (in the rind), and more commonly found in cinnamon and cacao.

Polyphenols are a broad class of antioxidants that include flavonoids and also the catechins in green tea believed responsible for supporting cardiovascular health. Think green, white, and red (rooibos) teas and cacao.

Quercetin is a type of flavonoid antioxidant which may also support healthy inflammatory processes. Think green tea, raspberries, leafy greens and sea buckthorn.

Try this cool, delicious and easy way to get a daily boost of antioxidants.

This recipe is inspired by Heidi Swanson’s Acai Power Popsicles from her new cookbook “Super Natural Cooking

Ingredients

  • 7 to 8 ounces (puree) frozen berries (any frozen berries or fruit, as well as acai puree can be used)
  • 3 ½ cups vanilla yogurt
  • honey or agave (optional & according to taste )

Method

Let the berries soften at room temperature for 5 minutes, then puree into a blender. Add 1 cup of the yogurt and purée until smooth. Taste, and if you like your popsicles sweeter, add honey or agave nectar a tablespoon at a time.

Use the remaining 2 ½ cups yogurt to fill each of the eight 4-ounce popsicle molds or paper cups two-thirds full. Top with the berry mixture and use the handle of the spoon to swirl the berry purée into yogurt. Stir just enough to get some streaks going. Freeze. If you have trouble getting the popsicles out of their molds, give them a quick run under hot water.

Makes eight 4-ounce popsicles

Breakfast: Important and Easy

If you’re skipping breakfast, you’re not alone. About 70 percent of Americans skip eating breakfast and when they do eat it, it’s often loaded with sugar, refined carbohydrates, and fats. We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day yet we race out the door with only a cup of coffee until lunch.

Eating breakfast is not only simple, it’s got a lot of great health benefits. Many studies indicate that eating breakfast each day has health benefits like:

  • Weight management: eating a complete breakfast (about 600 calories, 97 grams of carbs and 93 grams of protein) could help with weight loss
  • Avoid weight gain: people who skip breakfast are more likely to gain weight
  • Heart disease: a breakfast rich in whole grains, including fruits and vegetables, may decrease instances of heart disease
  • Lower cholesterol: skipping breakfast can raise cholesterol levels
  • Be a better student: students who eat breakfast are less likely to be tardy, more alert in class and score better in tests

There are lots of healthy breakfast options that take only a few minutes to prepare. Smoothies, leftovers from dinner, soups, fruit yogurt, whole grain cereals made the night before and other options are simple, inexpensive and fast. Sometimes coming up with new ideas for a quick, healthy breakfast is just a matter of thinking a little bit outside the box.

A new super quick breakfast choice is our Veggie Blast juice. It’s got the equivalent of two servings of vegetables, 350% of vitamin B12, 100% of vitamin C, trace minerals and more.

Dr. Lindsey says he’s been having Veggie Blast for breakfast every morning:

“In reality, some of the healthiest people in the world eat hot soup such as miso for breakfast. Hot soup for breakfast generates heat, makes me sweat, and clears out the body. Drinking a warm mug of Veggie Blast is like having tomato soup or a big veggie juice in the am.”

So tell us, what is your favorite quick and easy breakfast?

Sleep Away the Pounds? The Benefits of A Better Night’s Sleep

We all know that a poor night’s sleep can result in daytime grogginess, poor performance and low energy levels but did you know that sleep deprivation can affect your weight? Let’s say you’ve cut calories and fats, are exercising several days a week, are tired and still haven’t been able to lose the extra pounds. What is missing may be sleep. Sleeping away pounds sounds too good to be true but research tells us the connection between healthy weight and sleep is tighter than we thought.

Our sleep requirements change as we age. In general adults require about 7-9 hours of sleep each night with children and teens requiring more. On those nights we don’t get enough sleep, our leptin levels fall. Leptin is a hormone which governs appetite and falling levels may signal the brain to consume more calories, eventually leading to overeating. Prolonged sleep disturbances can lead to more serious health risks including obesity, blood sugar imbalances, poor memory function and others.

Easy Sleep Program

4 Sleep & Relaxation – A special blend of Montmorency tart cherry juice (a source of naturally-occurring melatonin), pure, wild harvested noni juice, L-theanine (a calming amino acid), a small amount of pharmaceutical-grade melatonin, and herbs selectively chosen for their calming effect are all combined in this easy to drink, bioavailable liquid. Benefits include healthy sleep patterns, relaxation and calmness, and healthy inflammatory processes.

4Total Nutrition – A comprehensive liquid vitamin and mineral supplement, 4Total Nutrition provides the body with a complete panel of essential nutrients that bathe all the cells and tissues of the body.

4Total Calcium – Calcium is a mineral necessary for cellular functions, and its buddy, Magnesium, is known as the “smoothie mineral” can help with relaxation. Both are needed for healthy, highly functioning cells in the body!

Earth Day 2010

Earth Day is a great day to celebrate and acknowledge our precious planet. We’ve talked about our single stream recycling in the office, our Zero VOC paints and other earth-friendly practices.  Today we’d like to share about some of our global “green” partners: our Superfruit farmers.

Acai

Before Acai berries became known outside Brazil, immature Acai palms were sold as decorative plants to tourists. This continued until locals found that saving the trees and simply harvesting the berries was not only more sustainable, but generates a consistent income. The large seeds from the Acai berries are often used to create beads for jewelry – no part of the fruit is wasted!

The Acai growing season can last between 3-6 months a year and a family works together for efficiency. One person makes a foot sling out of a palm frond and climbs up the first palm trunk. He trims off the heavy branches of fruit and lets them fall to the ground before moving to the next tree.  Meanwhile others gather the branches together and put them into woven baskets. The pickers move rapidly from tree to tree. Speed is essential as Acai berries are highly perishable and care is taken to keep them in the shade as much as possible. When enough branches are trimmed, the farmers return home to pick off the berries. They are stored in the house until the buyer comes by boat to take them to a washing and processing plant for flash freezing. Acai provides most of the annual income for these small family farmers.

The Acai Berry is considered a Superfood and has super high levels of anti-oxidants which are known to benefit and sustain a healthy lifestyle. Most locals have their own Acai juicing machine at home – imagine having fresh pressed Acai juice every day!

Celebrate Arkansas Magazine
April 2010

By Dr. Lindsey Duncan

My name is Lindsey Duncan. I’m a certified nutritionist, doctor of naturopathy and founder of Genesis Today, a company that produces all-natural juices, snacks, desserts and liquid dietary supplements.

I’ve been asked to provide insight and commentary in this column each month and I’m looking forward to discussing a wide range of relevant topics with the readers of Celebrate Arkansas.

The theme of this month’s issue is sustainability. That hits close to home. We make products from acai, goji, Resveratrol, cacao – commonly called “superfoods” – that are grown in places like the Brazilian rainforest, China, Southeast Asia and Polynesia. Most are wild harvested or grown using sustainable farming methods.

Words like “sustainability” and “green” used to be considered out of the mainstream, often used in discussions with political overtones.

Then the notion of developing more sustainable products and practices began to gain traction, but for most consumers the terms also became synonymous with “expensive” and “inaccessible.”

That’s no longer the case. Sustainability has become conventional. It’s getting easier to find services and products that can help anyone save energy, use less water, live healthier and generally do less harm to the earth and those who inhabit it.

Cheryl Wheeler Duncan is Flying High and Healthy!

Cheryl shares her lifestyle and the nutrition secrets that are the bedrock of the vibrant life she shares with Dr. Lindsey and their daughters. World champion kick-boxer, professional stuntwoman, certified nutritionist, private pilot, wife, mother—all of these adjectives describe Cheryl Wheeler Duncan. Though her days of kick-boxing competition are long over, she is still “stunting” part-time, staying in great physical shape in order to double the beautiful and svelte actresses on the big screen.

Here is the full version of the published article (PDF) featured in April 2010 Issue of Healthy Living with Cheryl on the cover:

I am a big believer in taking care of myself to the best of my ability, without stressing about being perfect.  Like many women, I find myself juggling many different responsibilities at once… career, husband, kids (2 daughters, 10 and 11), home projects, the endless list of errands… grocery shopping, dry cleaning, cooking, chauffeuring, pet care, volunteering at school, etc.  My days seem to run together at times, shaped by my various projects and of course, my children’s schedules… piano, basketball, gymnastics, tutoring, theatre classes, and so on, depending on the time of year and the sporting season.  When I take a movie job, this adds a completely new element of stress as to how to get it all “done”!

My biggest challenge at times is how to make myself a priority when as a female and mother, it’s all about nurturing and taking care of everyone else!  In my career as a stuntwoman, I have to stay in shape and take care of myself to avoid injury.   This means taking the time to exercise and work out, as well as making the right food choices to keep my body strong and as youthful as possible (doubling those young movie actresses are the perfect motivation! Ha!)  At 49 it’s much harder than it was at 29!  I have some basic principles that I live by and follow to the best of my abilities.

Exercise-Whenever and Wherever

I work out whenever and wherever I can and it’s not always at the gym.  I drop my youngest daughter off at basketball practice in the afternoon and put on my running shoes, and while many of the other mothers are sitting on the bleachers reading a book, I’m off and running, squeezing in an intense one hour run.  I’ll top it off with push-ups, frog jumps and sit ups, and I’ve just gotten an incredible full body workout during my daughter’s practice.  I’ve learned to make do with what I have, wherever I’m at.  I can do almost any leg workout with a high curb or stairs… upper body workouts as well.  Rubber bands are also an awesome workout accessory and I keep them in my car for easy access.  You never know when a workout opportunity will present itself. Cooking with Turmeric

Turmeric Recipe

Turmeric is a root (rhizome) with a pungent woody flavor and is widely used in Asian cuisine. Considered a superfood, turmeric is responsible for the yellow color in curry! It is a relative of ginger, and is often ground into a powder from the root of a large-leafed Asian plant.

Turmeric, whether used as fresh root or as dry powder, contains 5 percent curcumin – the ingredient that researchers at UCLA hypothesized might clean up or block the buildup of amyloid plaques that may contribute to diseases of the brain. Researchers believe curcumin fights disease partly by shutting down a powerful protein that promotes an abnormal inflammatory response in the body. According to modern medicine turmeric supports healthy inflammatory processes and is high in anti-oxidants which may have range of benefits.

One Small Change – Day 11

Day 11
People wonder why they lose their head when they age. When was the last time you stood on your head?

This small change is about mental fatigue and forgetfulness (the whole spectrum, all the way to dementia). The solution is to get vitamins and minerals in liquid form into your bloodstream. Then you should hang your head over the bed in the morning so the all blood rushes to the deep tissues of your brain, and feeds your brain the liquid minerals and vitamins. The brain tissues are being fed and soaked in the nutrients and the brain starts to function better. After about 30 days the brain will start to function 30 to 50% stronger, depending if you hang over for a long time. A long time is 4 to 5 minutes, but 4 to 5 minutes of inverting your skull with the blood rushing to the tissues is worth running twenty miles for your brain.

Essentially, if the blood is filled with liquid nutrients, then the blood is driven into the brain feeding the tissue, the brain will function at a higher rate of performance. It is worth gold/diamonds for a person who is losing their mental functions.

One Small Change – Day 7

One Small Change – Day 7
In the morning, if you drink a tall glass of warm purified water, almost hot, with a half an organic lemon squeezed in it. It will take away over 50% of your appetite. If you add one tablespoon of any high quality fiber product, it will take away your appetite by almost 90%. If you follow this one small change, the benefits are far and wide. 1. It heats up your body, which stimulates metabolism. It purifies and cleanses your gallbladder and liver. It flushes, sweeps, and cleanses your entire upper and lower digestive tracks. This is important, for the mere fact most people in the US have toxic livers, and colon cancer, unfortunately, is our second leading cancer. Guess what the cost it is… half a lemon.

Don’t substitute other Sea Buckthorn juices here. Our Sea Buckthorn100 is very pure, tart and potent. We don’t add other fruit juices and you will not get same Sea Buckthorn “kick” using another brand. Relax, Chew and Massage for Digestion

All of us have to eat food. Then we sit back while our bodies digest what we’ve eaten. It sounds so simple that we take it for granted. That is, until something goes wrong.  Sometimes we eat something that didn’t agree with us, or we feel  bloated and heavy after a meal. Gas, bloating, acid reflux and constipation are signals that our bodies are not digesting optimally. Whether we’ve made the wrong food choice, eaten too much or too fast, we offer some suggestions on how to support your digestive health.

Digestion has a lot to do with the internal ecology of the gut. Diets high in sugars and starchy foods can feed the wrong bacteria in the gut, as well as Candida. By eliminating sugars and drastically reducing refined starches (doughnuts, baked goods made with white flour), digestion and reflux problems may resolve themselves in just a few days.

We don’t realize that the environment in the gut changes with our diet. Refined starches and overly processed foods also harm the cells of the stomach (along with alcohol, coffee and medications), reducing the output of stomach acid, which plays a critical role in breaking down foods, particularly proteins.  Poorly digested foods, along with an overgrowth of yeast, can result in fermentation, which causes the production of gases.  Gases in a tube must go somewhere! Oftentimes, if food is making its way down the tube (i.e., gastrointestinal tract), or if constipation is a problem, the gas pressure is upward, pushing the contents in the stomach up with it. Genesis Today teams up with charities to help flood and tornado victims in Nashville and Oklahoma

We all watched in horror as flooding devastated Nashville and multiple tornados ripped through Oklahoma, causing billions of dollars in damage and leaving thousands homeless and without food, clean water, and electricity. Many families face devastating losses that will take years to recover from.

Genesis Today has partnered with the charities Mobile Loaves and Fishes and Feed the Children to help donate 100,000+ bottles of our Goji, Acai, and Resveratrol juices to the relief efforts (more than $140,000 value.)

“As a company whose mission is to make health and nutrition accessible, I can’t think of a better use of our products than to help people who are under great strain” says Genesis Today founder and CEO Dr. Lindsey Duncan.

Our hearts go out to those who are suffering, and we’re proud to be a part of helping to bring relief to these regions. To learn more about how you can help, please visit:
